The island is 200 km ( 125 miles ) from the African coast.----Crete is long and thin for 250km east to west.. ---
Crete has 1046 km of coastline. ---I arrived in Iraklio [ Heraklion ] early morning by ferry from mainland Greece. I asked directions to my hotel , and an old man took me to the end of the street near the hotel. this was a nice welcome. . -- The city centre of Iraklio lies within the Venetian Wall, that was reinforced by the Turks.----I moved on by bus, taking one hour,to Rethymo 50 miles west of Iraklio. Bus times on KTEL website. -- Iraklio [ Heraklion ] is the capital of the island of Crete. ----- Rethymo has a huge Fortress, looming over the place.--- My third stay was Hania, the second largest city on Crete. There is a Venetian harbour. Wherever i went on Crete the food was great.---Place names are often different Iraklio is Heraklion, Hania often Chania.---I took a public bus to Paleohora a lovely place, on the Libya Sea side of the island------From Hania i took the ferry back to mainland Greece..----- Crete is a lovely place. Full of beauty and history. The currency is the Euro.
